Project Brief:
Consider how documentary-style photography can be used to tell stories. Explore how photography is both constructed and spontaneous, truth and fiction. Choose an image to reframe / reimagine.
A brief to copy someone else’s work is not one you get very often as a creative, often it’s something you want to avoid entirely. Despite this I was drawn to Elinor Carucci’s photograph ‘Early Morning, Mother of Two’ (2010). It has quality of story within the subjects it captures. I was interested in recontextualising the image. I wanted to see what would happen if I captured a subject in a different place. How would it change the story told? To do this I photographed myself in my apartment in amongst my plants. The goal was to evoke a calm feeling rather than a rushed one like in Carucci’s photograph.
